Kadıköy from Past to Present

The history of the historical district of Kadıköy, located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, dates back centuries. The establishment of Kadıköy dates back to a time long before the city of Istanbul to which it is affiliated. Archaeological studies have found remains of life dating back to 3000 BC. The ancient cities located on the coastline of Fikirtepe and Moda were stops for the Phoenicians on their way to the Black Sea coast.

Kadıköy hosted ancient civilizations. Kadıköy joined the Ottoman Empire in 1353. Evliya Çelebi mentioned in his Seyahatname that Kadıköy was a Muslim neighborhood and had windmills and lodges. Kızıltoprak and Fenerbahçe were the first neighborhoods of Kadıköy in history.

Kadıköy, which remained under the Üsküdar district until 1930, became a district in 1930. The popular neighborhoods and townships of Kadıköy hosted mansions and pavilions with gardens where the rich lived. Rapid population growth occurred in the neighborhoods that were summer resorts day by day.

Urbanization began to increase here after the Republic period. The opening of the Bosphorus Bridge in 1973 strengthened the relationship between the two sides of the city and led to Kadıköy gaining weight in the population balance. The opening of the coastal and highways over time, industrialization and population growth made Kadıköy an increasingly popular and developed district.

Today, the most developed, urbanized and popular districts of the Anatolian side, Acıbadem, Bostancı, Caddebostan, Erenköy, Fenerbahçe, Göztepe, Koşuyolu, Kozyatağı and Suadiye districts are in Kadıköy.
